Saw Earth, Disney’s latest movie, a couple days ago. I’d give the movie a 7 out of 10 (it’s not bad), but award the audience a mere 5. Talking, cell phone conversations, rowdy kids and commenting teenagers, more talking – it was one of those movie-going experiences that makes dvds at home very appealing.

What is a weed but a flower in the wrong place? There are three main ways to look at this picture: yellow flowers, pernicious weed, or… free salad. It’s our own mundane Rashomon effect on a Brooklyn corner.
Fire training, with a view

Firemen appeared to be having a training exercise at a building on the Brooklyn waterfront. The people at the Brooklyn Promenade were eating it up … the scene was sooo New Yorky: a glorious view of downtown Manhattan, the East River, and wee firemen running fearlessly and nonchalantly up the firetruck’s ladder.
The good news: it’s pizza & it’s cheap

Is that a really a good thing? Smith Street is bursting with restaurants, but I’m not sure where I’d go for a plain old slice.

It’s a heatwave weekend – temperature records are expected to be broken today. Spring is a pleasant season here in NYC, so it will be nice to return to seasonal weather in a few days.
Red Hook is usually more scenic

The big box store is not to blame for the view. In fact, Ikea hasn’t been a horror for the neighborhood. They’ve added park land, benches, and tables where there wasn’t any before. Tugs and other boats chug around just offshore, but the old ship yards lack the photogeneity of the part of Red Hook [...]

Tony Matelli’s Stray Dog, at Metrotech, is an effective piece of public art. It’s not overly complicated yet elicits varied emotional reactions. Small kids love to climb on the sculpture because it’s a life-size, immobile dog. Older viewers respond to the dog’s expression and the harness on its back. You feel the loss while being [...]

They’ll do the haircut, and you can work on the vapid expression in your bathroom mirror. This unisex salon does quite a booming business.

No nerve, I tell you. It’s like they came up with a really good name for a restaurant (or so they thought), then realized that people might not want just chicken. So they went overboard in the other direction: Solo Pollo has clams, shrimp, fish, hamburgers, gyros, yuca, green bananas, philly cheese steaks, hot, cold, [...]
Tortoise follow the leader

These creatures were out enjoying the sun in the side yard of Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Kensington. Food was nearby and predators weren’t, so I assume they were happy. It’s hard to tell.
