Turns out he did need volunteers, like this woman, handing out pamphlets, to get a few crucial votes. The third term is historically a rough one for NYC politicians; money can buy many things, but not popularity.

Enjoy the bright leaves, they’ll soon be all off the trees. The sun is going down before 5:00 PM, with daylight savings; now it feels like it’s officially fall. This year the merchants didn’t even wait for Halloween to be over before they got out the Christmas decorations. That’s the other indicator that there’s been a change of season.

The walkway at this Scarano construction is flimsy, but the view isn’t bad, considering it’s Fourth Avenue. On Sunday morning, this unbeautiful roadway became mile six of the NYC Marathon route. Through these makeshift window was a view of more than 40,000 runners going by.

Not the best, not the worst. What can I say, other than I hope more restaurants and pizza parlors move to Church Avenue between McDonald and Ocean Parkway? There are so few decent places to eat or sit and have a coffee that even a Starbucks would be welcome.

Did it fall or was it dropped? If it was summer there would be a rainbow puddle on the sidewalk. Fifty degree weather does not make most of us hanker for a sno-cone. May someone bought it, thinking it was something else, something tasty, then realized it’s only flavored ice shavings in a wax-paper cone, and, disappointed, dashed it to the pavement.

This is Halloween. Those Martha Stewart-ish creations that involve intricate carving and slicing are nice enough, but a regular old jack o’lantern has abundant charm. This trio looks like it was actually carved by children. Maybe pumpkin carving became an elaborate craft when parents decided that knives don’t belong in the hands of wee folk and took over the responsibility.

The fall colors are peaking right now, I heard on the news. Better run outside and enjoy them before it’s too late. Look where you’re walking, because after recent heavy rains, a lot of the leaves are already on the ground.
