They are orange-yellow, the size of an Idaho potato, come from Chile, and remind me of a tropical fish. These fruits are also covered all over with sharp spines that demand to be touched. The only other thing I know about them is that they cost $4.99 apiece and won’t be coming home with me. Sometimes you can put a price tag on curiosity.
cool pic. but i am with you, not sure this one makes it into the basket 😉
I JUST ATE ONE OF THESE~WHAT IS IT? IT TASTES LIKE NOTHING! FULL OF SOFT SEEDS, GREEN INSIDE, AND THIS TIME OF YEAR (JUNE) IT WAS .59 CENTS EACH. NOT WORTH CARRYING HOME.
What is this called? Got it at Central Market. Kathleen is right on -“tastes like noting and full of soft seeds” with a light green soft almost liquid substance surrounding them. My daughter and I decided one might want to use the juice but certainly it is not a fruit we would sit and eat. Would love to know how they are used and what they are called.
Just found this it is a Kiwno Melon from Africa.
Now we know what it’s called, and we know for sure not to buy one!
It is like a very juicy banana with lots of seeds.
It is not sweet because it is not a fruit! It is a vegitable in the cucumber family! It is called Kiwano, not kiwna and also called horned melon or English tomato and is really good for you 🙂 You can cook it many different ways.

Thanks for the info! They are really cool looking, but I’m STILL going to resist until the price drops!
[…] I know more now than I did two years ago about the horned fruit (a.k.a., the kiwano melon). This unusual fruit can be found in some Brooklyn grocery stores. These were grown in the U.S., and are $4.99 apiece – too pricey for me. I’m happy just to look, hold one in my hand, then put it back. I just got 1 hor6ed melon Kiwano in my fruit basket for Chrsitmas and I made a smoothie with th3 Kiwana melon, pear, peach, apple , and a banana. I hope it is ok to eat withou6 cooking it. My drink tasted pretty good. Try it, you’ll like it.
Just to be clear, this IS in fact a fruit, not a vegetable. All melons, including cucumbers, are fruits!.
