When I walked past, I didn’t think the lights were turned on – this is a somewhat understated tree, despite the bows. The picket fence seemed a little suburban, but nearby is a Tom Otterness sculpture of a manhole alligator with its jaws wrapped around a smaller creature. We are in an alternate universe here in Metrotech.

I actually like its simplicity. I think the red ribbons add the right festive touch. The manhole alligator is weird — but I love the idea too!

Metrotech is in downtown Brooklyn, near the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s a fairly successful example of urban revitalization, a combination of office space, green areas, which serve as a place for public art, a university building, and some food shops. Metrotech is a place you wouldn’t necessarily go out of your way to visit, but with the park space and the art, it’s pretty nice. Learn more here.
