It’s been so dry everyone’s happy that it’s raining. We are not swearing (too much) that it’s windy and that umbrellas are being turned inside-out a couple times every minute.

Sooner or later, every part of Brooklyn will have tourists. I don’t know why I should be surprised to see a pack of them on the walkway near the F and A trains. The Marriott is nearby, and so is the Brooklyn Bridge.

“Balanced Cylinders” by Paul Sisko (1984), sits on the Metrotech plaza in front of an NYU Polytechnic University building. The sculpture brings color to the space, but it strains to appear whimsical and spontaneous. I think of lipstick advertising.

The Metrotech coffee stand is as big as a double-wide phone booth, if there were such a thing. It’s just large enough to accommodate two sturdy men. A Starbucks is a hundred steps to the left, but the long lines at the coffee stand confirm that many people like the convenience and efficiency of ordering en plein air year-round.

All it takes to conjure the round-headed kid is a black diagonal stripe on a yellow background. This detail of a piece of plywood was taken at Jay Street, where subway work on the platforms continues and continues ….

This used to be a stairway. The spraypainted CLOSED message seems redundant, given the half-inch plywood that will stop even the most oblivious of subway riders.

No one’s trying to pay for a ride at what used to be a token booth.

Construction continues, but movement around the platforms is easier. A lot of what they are doing is tilework, which doesn’t interrupt trains coming in and out of the station. The Metrotech entrance/exit is open again, which makes me happy because it’s my favorite entrance to Jay St. (It’s larger, airier, and cleaner than other stairwells – and closer to to tasty coffee.)

The Jay Street subway station is undergoing a major renovation, and it is a BIG mess this weekend. Shuttle buses are running in place of A trains between the station and Utica Avenue, and there are slowdowns because the A and F trains are usings the same inbound track. This flower vendor brought some welcome color to the construction scene.
