The pedestrian area at Times Plaza, across from Atlantic Mall, has been widened, probably to control traffic in anticipation of the completion of Barclays Center. The asphalt has been decorated with a large rose the color of a basketball.

They are advertising Brooklyn basketball in Midtown Manhattan. Now what the Nets need is a good record and for the Barclays Center to be completed.

This is an anything goes summer, in terms of fashion. People are piling on plaid upon plaid and wearing two or three patterns at once. This kid’s being pretty tame.

The Nets’ arena is growing by the day, and what’s most striking is that the sides of the building are going to be up against the roadway. It’s a narrow fit. The nearby intersections are hellish, but now traffic cops are frequently posted at the three main lights, so that helps.

People who work at the mall need to import food, because the take-out you’ll find inside is boring and predictable, and most of it makes pizza seem wholesome.

That crane is huge, a reminder of the magnitude of the Atlantic Yards project. Steel was erected for the first time last week, and the developers are saying that the arena will open the summer of 2012. I predict that customer service at the Atlantic Mall Pathmark will still be lousy and Forest City Ratner is going to try to make the local hot dog vendors disappear.

Things are happening at Atlantic Yards; construction proceeds. A guy who was taking pictures next to me can’t wait for the sports arena to be finished. He was telling his friend that he can practically hear the sound of a bouncing basketball.

Crossing Flatbush and looking stylish, that’s an accomplishment. The fashionistas say itty-bitty skirts are out. Longer is more flattering, easier to wear.

The man behind the Italian ice cart is either confident of his product or in the wrong line of work. Unlike most street vendors, he’s not putting any energy into selling his goods.
