The afternoon was hazy at Manhattan Beach. When thunder boomed and lightning was visible offshore, the lifeguards waved everyone in. The storm moved quickly. It’s sort of funny to see bathing suit-clad people running in the pouring rain, trying to find a dry place to take cover.

The year was 1950, and a striking young woman with an singular talent for fitting her healthy figure into a bathing suit was at Coney Island. A police officer with a photography hobby struck up a conversation, took some pictures, and a couple years later Bettie Page was a familiar name to men everywhere. She died this past Thursday in Los Angeles at age 85.
