While walking around Brooklyn, I came across a frontyard garden devoted to bitter melon. The garden patch was about the size and height of a mid-sized car. That’s a lot of this strange-looking vegetable. A cheery neighbor interrogated me. “Do you know what those are?” he asked. “Yes,” I replied. “Asians love them!” he told me. I have yet to sample the bitter melon; they are about $1.99 a pound at the green grocer.

Because I can’t. My guess is that it’s an Asian squash. You’ll note the bitter melons in the upper right corner. I’m looking, not buying; that’s the extent of my curiosity today.
