The Carroll Street Bridge over the Gowanus Canal is 120 years old. It’s a retractile bridge, one of only four in the U.S.; to open, the bridge rolls back on steel rails. Fortunately, this is pretty far up the canal and doesn’t have to allow boats through often. This picture is of the gate that swings shut to prevent cars from crossing when the bridge is moving. With the cobblestones and brick buildings, the scene is olde timey, except for the Bkln Yard visitors to the right.

So green and atmospheric is our local waterway, the Gowanus Canal! On Saturday I went to the Bklyn Yard, on Carroll Street, where popular local food vendors were serving from their trucks. I don’t do well with lines, so it’s a good thing the scenery was satisfying. The event was well attended, and the crowd was orderly and patient, though unmoved by the hardworking DJ. A 45 minute wait for food will do that. Bklyn Yard is a nice venue in warm weather, like an overgrown backyard.
