I would have been as surprised to see an elephant swimming up the Gowanus Canal, but five canoes, filled with adults and children, made their way past Pathmark and Lowe’s. Part of the fun of being in a small boat is dragging a stick or fingers in the water, but in this body of greenish, toxic water, that’s to be discouraged. You can imagine the lecture those kids got before stepping foot in a canoe.
