Brighton Beach is the neighborhood just up the boardwalk from Coney Island. With a large Russian-speaking population, you’ll find stores, restaurants, and fashions that are different from other parts of NYC.

The tub of fish was just inside the door of a gourmet shop. Curiously, it was the only fish I saw. The store specializes in candy, nuts, jams, coffee, cheese, and things in jars.

Hot and hazy on the Coney Island boardwalk. School was off yesterday (Brooklyn-Queens Day) – the beach was packed and the atmosphere was tense. Further down, in Brighton Beach, by Tatiana, there was a shooting that left a teenager dead and three others wounded. The gunman hasn’t been caught yet.
