Atlantic Avenue in the few blocks between Smith Street and Third Avenue, has three bakeries. It’s inevitable that I sample goods from each. Betty Bakery, seen here, specializes in cakes, but the small shop has cookies, cupcakes, homemade Twinkie-like things, and other sweets.

This isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned the cupcakes from Downtown Atlantic. It’s my favorite cupcake shop, because it’s the only one I frequent, and that’s infrequently. I like the idea of homemade versions of mass-produced products. It’s so post-industrial, embracing the idea of a Hostess cupcake, then improving it by making it in your own kitchen.
