June 1, and we are a few days into the unofficial start of summer. People in NY still wear lots of black, but there are also seasonal displays of color (and white). At the greengrocer, red, yellow, green, pink, and orange are everywhere. Purple is more unusual.

Swaddled and coddled, these zucchini are ready for their bedtime story. Shhhh… Gentle treatment today will mean they will be more tender in the ratatouille tomorrow.
Have a cardone

The growers in California would like you to know that this humble-looking vegetable is related to the artichoke. Cardone (or cardoon) is eaten in France and Italy, where it’s cut into pieces and boiled or fried. At Three Guys from Brooklyn, no one was touching the stuff.

While walking around Brooklyn, I came across a frontyard garden devoted to bitter melon. The garden patch was about the size and height of a mid-sized car. That’s a lot of this strange-looking vegetable. A cheery neighbor interrogated me. “Do you know what those are?” he asked. “Yes,” I replied. “Asians love them!” he told me. I have yet to sample the bitter melon; they are about $1.99 a pound at the green grocer.

A sign like that is an easy set-up: If this is supposed to be nice and new, I’m glad I don’t remember what this vegetable store was like before! Swinging bare bulbs and overturned milk crates don’t do much for atmosphere. The produce is cheap, though.

That’s how it works – it’s not until you’re on the subway steps, on the way to the platform, that you notice the fine fruits and vegetables down at street level. Next time I’ll go there, and I’ll check out the meal offerings, too.
