Real estate prices are so out of control in some neighborhoods that the greengrocers are disappearing. That is bad news for consumers, because the best fruits and vegetables usually don’t come from the grocery store. There, the selection tends to be limited, pricey, and not always very fresh.

December at this grocery store means Christmas… and all things sweet and edible. I like their garish single-mindedness and will return to the store and see how the scene evolves as the month goes along.

At first I thought these were called “paws” because it sounds nicer. With a little digging, I quickly found out more than needed to. To summarize: a chicken foot includes the ankle. If you are raising poultry, be sure to keep your chickens’ feet dry. They will be happier and the soup that happens later will taste better.

I know more now than I did two years ago about the horned fruit (a.k.a., the kiwano melon). This unusual fruit can be found in some Brooklyn grocery stores. These were grown in the U.S., and are $4.99 apiece – too pricey for me. I’m happy just to look, hold one in my hand, then put it back.
