This laundromat is at street level but looks like someone’s dingy basement. Any moment, I expect someone wearing a housecoat or baggy boxer shorts to shuffle in and yell at me.

When I saw this picture, I felt like I was peering into an outdoor subway car at night, like the F Train at Fourth Avenue, rather than a street-corner laundromat. Life takes an occasional surreal turn, but don’t think too much about where the water and electricity for the mobile washers and dryers might come from.

This place is still open for business. The washers and dryers have to be newer than the facade. Long ago someone made a vow not to spend one penny more than they had to in order to keep the launderette going.
