Cold, wet weather is problematic for picture taking. But from inside the deli I’ve transformed Church Avenue into a fine looking shopping plaza. Tame your enthusiasm, though. The name brands at the 1/2 Price Outlet aren’t any you have ever heard of.

The stuff at Beacon’s Closet is a little used, but mostly on the cool side, and who can argue with a pink plastic tree? The store has three locations: Park Slope, Williamsburg, and Manhattan. I like the one that’s convenient.

Already, I can feel the cash flying out my pockets this weekend, and I know I’m not alone. This store, on the cool side of Smith Street near Atlantic, could take care of many of your shopping needs, if you like to give pillows, hand-knitted items, and clothing that says Brooklyn on it.

Goorin Brothers is a small chain. They’ve been in business for over a hundred years, but only in Brooklyn since hipsters needed hats. Let me amend that – when guys began buying hats in stores like this, other people were already putting big, fat quotation marks around the word “hipster.” Go looking for your own style; if you don’t have one, then boldly come back to this shop.

86th Street in Bay Ridge was actually a good place to shop after work yesterday. If the choice was between staying home and going out, getting wet and cold, and spending money, people did the sensible thing.

Rent is high on Church Avenue around East 3rd; that’s why some stores turn over so quickly. What moves in: nail salons, cell phone stores, and junky clothing places.

When every third store is a cell phone store, you can be sure you won’t be seeing a Saks Fifth Avenue soon. Fulton Mall still its Macy’s; if that were to go, the shopping area would really be in trouble.
