Some of the rain, melted snow, and a what-not from the streets ends up here, at the “Wet weather discharge point” to the lower right. It’s also called the Gowanus Canal, and it was quite fetid when I snapped this picture: green and moldy, trashy, with flower petals and a dead rat floating feet in the air. People heed the warnings not to recreate in the area, without looking at the sign.

You can catch a view between Carroll Street and Fourth Avenue, but there are construction fences in the way and about a thousand fingerprints on the window. It’s always nice to glimpse the water, though.

Hold on tight as the train leaves Smith and 9th heading for Carroll Street; it’s quite a drop, from this angle at least. The trip between these two stations is also a favorite of movie makers because it’s so New York-y:  you get a clear, outside view of subway tracks  and another of downtown Manhattan.

The G Train conductor closed the doors before I could wedge my foot in. I was waiting at the station for a while, which gave me time to ponder the neighborhood’s namesake, Charles Carroll of Maryland. He was a Revolutionary War veteran and the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, and I won’t give him much thought until the next 4th of July.

the canal

So green and atmospheric is our local waterway, the Gowanus Canal! On Saturday I went to the Bklyn Yard, on Carroll Street, where popular local food vendors were serving from their trucks. I don’t do well with lines, so it’s a good thing the scenery was satisfying. The event was well attended, and the crowd was orderly and patient, though unmoved by the hardworking DJ. A 45 minute wait for food will do that. Bklyn Yard is a nice venue in warm weather, like an overgrown backyard.
