Morrie Yohai, inventor of the Cheez Doodle, died on July 27. The fluffy cornmeal tubes with the cheddar dusting have been around since the late 1950’s. (I think the crunchy Cheez Doodles were an industrial accident that proved to have consumer appeal.) Brooklyn consumes its fair share of the things. (It wasn’t three weeks ago I mentioned Cheez Doodles in the blog – without Doodles, the balls would not exist.)

Great balls of cheese

Target can’t use the word “cheez” because it belongs to Wise and its Doodle products. Too bad. Cheese balls should be reserved for Hickory Farm and their Christmas-y cheddar baseballs rolled in walnuts. The Target snacks aren’t cheap: one pound, six ounces goes for $4.99 – you’re paying for air that tastes like ersatz cheese, in other words.
