Gas rationing is in effect; there were no lines at Shell on Atlantic. But there was a photo student and her model taking pictures in the bright light. She said, Sure, take some pictures. The cops keeping an eye on the gas station thought it was rather amusing.

61 Local, on Bergen Street near the subway, calls itself a public house rather than a pub. It’s a bar that is community minded: a CSA pick-up location with lectures on composting. The space at 61 Local is roomy, with tall ceilings, bamboo picnic tables. The beer is cool and people were enjoying the simple food.

Parents with young ‘uns, mark your calendars for the upcoming screenings. If you’re really lucky, the theater will show a grown-up movie (non-animated) and no one will bug you or harrumph when your infant starts making sounds.

There’s no real food at The Chocolate Room, just chocolate items, ice cream, coffees, teas, hot chocolate, some kid-friendly drinks, and wine. Judging from the crowds, it’s a winning combination.

You’d think we were farmers here in NYC, the way we carry on about the weather. But it really was cold today! I don’t think the temperatures made it above the mid-twenties. If it looks like someone’s laughing, his or her face probably froze in that position yesterday.

It’s a purveyor of meat, at 222 Court Street. I’m no fan of the carne, but I do like the neon. This shop, around since 1917, has such a loyal allegiance that it’s hard to find anyone who will say a negative word about this place and all the meat, game, and gourmet products it has for sale.

I find the name rather cutesy and confusing, since the burgers are not all made of beef, but since it opened a few days ago, people have been crowding Mooburger on Court Street. It’s organic and tastefully decorated, the anti-5 Guys.

All of a sudden it’s too cold for sidewalk dining. Shorts after dark are scant for many of us. The doors are flung open because the indoor temperature is about 90 from the tortillas on the flat-top grill.

The 9-11 anniversary is never far from our thoughts this weekend. Displays like the beams of light are there to remind us.
