Yesterday morning, in front of Borough Hall, there was singing and dancing in anticipation of Passover.
I didn’t understand a word of the songs, but the music had that timeless Hammond organ feeling, more enthusiastic than subtle, more Yankee Stadium than Carnegie Hall. Good entertainment for a couple minutes.

We lost a memorable singer and personality when Eartha Kitt passed away at age 81 on Christmas day. My first knowledge of her was as Bruce Wayne’s Russian girlfriend, Miss Kitka, in the Batman TV movie. Though I loved her name, I was thinking mainly about Batman: “You idiot! Can’t you see she’s Catwoman?”
Eartha Kitt dropped out of high school at 15 and sewed uniforms in a Brooklyn factory. Within two years, she was singing and dancing in Europe. There’s no mention in her bios whether she ever returned to the County of Kings.
