Yesterday, at the Dunkin Donuts by Pathmark and the Gowanus Canal, people were preparing for the storm by buying donuts. Mid-afternoon, there were crullers left as well as some misshapen donut sticks, and bagels, too. This little shopping center, in Zone A, will be closed until further notice.

Somewhere around Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street there’s a new Dunkin Donuts. We got involved with a neighboring table when they asked us to smell their drink and tell them if it seemed bad. The fancy drink was totally off! Some milk product had clearly spoiled. I’m heading back to the donut place by Ninth Street even thought there’s a Grade C posted in the window.

Is it a worldwide phenomenon, the urge to eat in the car, or do Americans feel the urge more than most drivers? The price of gas is up for the holiday season; in the city it’s going for $3.29 a gallon, give or take a dime.
