Near Floyd Bennett Field, this area was the site of rendering plants in the 1800’s then a landfill in the 1900’s. Though the landfill was capped in the 1930’s, trash started spewing in the 1950’s, and that’s where the bottles came from. A surprising number are intact. The beach is fascinating, partly because it’s so accessible.

In the early 1930’s, Floyd Bennett Field was one of the busiest airports in the country. Now it’s part of Gateway National Recreational Area, and used by diverse groups. The beach is a filthy mess, but the area is great for wandering. The Gil Hodges Bridge is in the distance. (Watch the bridge webcam here.)
