Prospect Park is beautiful this time of year, with the leaves changing color. It’s impossible, though, to immerse yourself 100% in nature there. Turn a corner and you’ll encounter a reminder, like this cement landing, that the park is man-made and in the middle of a city.

A trip to the country fell through, so I went to the park in search of some nature. The lawns and playing fields are scorched, in need of rain, but the more woodsy areas are dense and thriving. It didn’t seem like Brooklyn behind Litchfield Villa, and might have felt like the middle of nowhere, if little voices from the 3rd Street Playground hadn’t been wafting uphill.

Grand Army Plaza, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (of Prospect Park and Central Park fame), is an 11-acre oval at the entrance to Prospect Park. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Arch, Brooklyn’s own Arc de Triomphe, sits at the top of the plaza. The other stand-out feature of the area is the outrageous traffic and confusing signage. Drivers have been complaining about it as long as cars have been popular, going on 100 years. Pedestrians, similarly challenged, have to deal with ill-timed lights and distracted drivers. When you can’t avoid the area, be alert and don’t assume anyone is following the posted directions.
