Our fancy superfunded canal has tributaries, which means more buildings and space for graffiti. On a gray day like today, the new work of Laozi stood out against the brick background. If snow happened, I didn’t see it.

Chilly breezy off the Gowanus

There may have been miniature whitecaps on the canal, that’s how windy it was on the Ninth Street drawbridge. It’s time to get out the gloves and other cold weather gear.

Like the lotus, this plant is a thing of beauty growing in a challenging situation. Here, where the sidewalk meets the plywood, you can see the the nearby superfunded Gowanus Canal seeping through the fence.
A fork in the Gowanus

The area by the Ninth Street Bridge over the Gowanus Canal feels busy and industrial, and view from the Union Street Bridge further on is fairly pastoral. It’s what’s in-between that you have to worry about. A funky aroma hovers over the canal around Third Street. You won’t hold your breath and run up the street, but you will remember, in case you forgot, “Oh, that’s right, SUPERFUND!”
A tree grows slowly on Third Street

This tree is the runt on the block at the moment, but trying to catch up to the other trees. You can tell that the Gowanus Canal is nearby because there are not many plants growing on Third Street.

The Hamilton Avenue Bridge is under the elevated highway. A tug was pushing a load of metal scrap up the Gowanus Canal. In in picture, what I mostly notice are the grids and lines everywhere.
Former “worst picnic spot” transformed

This site ceased being a picnic spot when they took away the tables. There’s so much NOT going for this place: the Superfunded canal, the scrap yard, the elevated highway, the oil tanks, cars zipping around the lot, and the funky aroma, but look at these blooming trees. They are literally a breath a fresh air and a treat for the eyes.

It’s the elements versus the tree, with a big dose of contamination and filth thrown in. The tree’s growth may be stunted, but it survives.

Attention dwindles with multiple signs, no? They need to add some warnings for the workers about the Gowanus Canal, which is by the work site: Don’t touch the water and don’t breathe the air.
“Notary District” houses almost finished

The houses replacing Vincent Russo’s eccentric realty and notary business on Smith Street, across from Budget, are almost finished. It’s clearly not the best place to own property: there’s the polluted Gowanus Canal nearby and the extensive work happening on the Smith & Ninth Street subway stop.
