Yesterday, at the Dunkin Donuts by Pathmark and the Gowanus Canal, people were preparing for the storm by buying donuts. Mid-afternoon, there were crullers left as well as some misshapen donut sticks, and bagels, too. This little shopping center, in Zone A, will be closed until further notice.

The Gowanus Canal, our local Superfund site, sprouts several watery arms along its length – this picture was taken at the end of one, at Third Avenue. The chain link on the bridge here is small-gauge, so people can only throw tiny objects in the water. They are literally a breath a fresh air and a treat for the eyes.

I would have been as surprised to see an elephant swimming up the Gowanus Canal, but five canoes, filled with adults and children, made their way past Pathmark and Lowe’s. Part of the fun of being in a small boat is dragging a stick or fingers in the water, but in this body of greenish, toxic water, that’s to be discouraged. You can imagine the lecture those kids got before stepping foot in a canoe.
