Let’s see, it’s not February, so it must be the end of October. Honest Abe, in a dress, was spotted on the subway platform. He’s serious from the neck up (Civil War’s on); but below, it’s a ladies’ lawn party. Maybe there’s candy in the tote bag.

This is Halloween. Those Martha Stewart-ish creations that involve intricate carving and slicing are nice enough, but a regular old jack o’lantern has abundant charm. This trio looks like it was actually carved by children. Maybe pumpkin carving became an elaborate craft when parents decided that knives don’t belong in the hands of wee folk and took over the responsibility.

They are so darn cute, these small pumpkins. They will mostly be used as seasonal decoration rather than cooking ingredient, even though they are not difficult to cook. Cut pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds, then toss it in the oven for 90 minutes or so. On the other hand, pumpkin in a can in ready to go and makes a delicious pie, and the recipe is handily printed on the can’s label.

Even if it’s been given the happiest face ever, any pumpkin that’s carved more than two weeks before Halloween is going to look scary by the end of October.

Halloween can be a year-round affair, if you so desire. This mysterious business exudes accidental charm. The building is painted silver, and the overturned chair further lends an air of drama. I’m probably just reading into it, though. Go back on a day when the place is open, and it may be a car repair shop like its neighbors.
