Today was supposed to be a special Saturday shopping day, the stores declared, but it was barely more crowded than usual in downtown Brooklyn. There weren’t any lines at the movie theater, either. Maybe people are staying in?

Already, I can feel the cash flying out my pockets this weekend, and I know I’m not alone. This store, on the cool side of Smith Street near Atlantic, could take care of many of your shopping needs, if you like to give pillows, hand-knitted items, and clothing that says Brooklyn on it.

This past weekend was a big one for holiday shopping. With the distressed economy, people are either being practical or out of control with the spending. My suggestion? Buy a couple ladders in primary colors; it’s a purchase that is useful and a little frivolous, too.
