For going on four years, the park, on Fifth Avenue and Third Street, has officially been named Washington Park, though the playground is still JJ Byrne Playground. In the middle of the park sits the Old Stone House, a reconstructed Dutch farmhouse that was central to the Battle of Brooklyn in the Revolutionary War. Now it’s a museum with its own website.

This weekend and next, evening performances of King Lear are being put on in JJ Byrne Park (4th St. & Fifth Ave.). It’s free and uncrowded. Unlike Central Park, you can show up at the last minute, plop down a blanket, open the picnic basket, and enjoy the show. The actors aren’t movie stars, and there can be occasional playground noise seeping in, but there’s something to be said for convenience.
