After you walk through a dark tunnel, the Stillwell Avenue subway lets out onto Surf Avenue. It’s flat and unremarkable: Nathan’s is to the right, plywood is across the street. No gigantic multicolor lollipops are for sale anywhere in sight. Be patient, though; it’s still winter.

Long before the current lapses in subway service, these train lines serving South Brooklyn were known as the Rarely and the Never. Riders may as well wait above-ground in the fresh air; it’s easy to hear when a train arrives and run down the stairs and catch it.

Sit tight, wait for the show, and admire the theatrical lighting; there won’t be trains running on this side of the platform for several hours. It seems that there’s a lot of subway construction, a.k.a. “necessary trackwork,” going on lately.

Whew, yesterday and today we’ve been having a taste of warmer, humid weather – this weekend is the symbolic beginning of summer, remember. The train air conditioning felt really good. FYI, that speck on top of the Brooklyn Bridge is an American flag. Many backyard flags will make their first appearance of the season on Monday, during barbecues.
