The air stank of meat and smoke, but the Ninth Street Playground looked marvelous. I didn’t see the source of the trouble, the smoke dissipated quickly, and no fire trucks appeared. Probably a crowded grill tipped over; a few Park Slope parents panicked. Order was restored and some pictures were taken.

In Mittenland, finding a rare pair like this like hitting three cherries on the slots at Vegas. They won’t make you rich, but if the owner doesn’t come back to claim them, another kid can put them to use.
