A center made of cork and rubber, a thick layer of thin cotton and/or wool yarn wound around that, and finally, two pieces of cowhide held together by 108 stitches of waxed red thread – that’s what a baseball is made of. Baseballs used in the major leagues average just 5 to 7 pitches. In a playground or on the street, baseballs last considerably longer, but face ongoing threat from sewers, dogs, and bullies.
