This stretch of Court Street has more brand-name outlets than the average block. You’ll also note the woman waiting for the bus has been to Trader Joe’s.

A bag of… balloons

It’s so un-mysterious, yet visually appealing at the same time, these balloons in a big garbage bag. Getting through the turnstiles took a couple of extra seconds. I wonder if the blue and white color scheme has something to do with the Super Bowl. Rah, rah, go Big Blue.

The night sky is very visible from the Coney Island-bound platform of the Fourth Avenue F and G station. It’s pleasant, when it’s not raining or snowing. But when it’s coming down, everyone’s cursing the MTA and the prolonged construction work.
Under the Ninth Street Bridge

The space underneath the Fourth Avenue Subway Bridge has never been that scary or disgusting: no trolls dwell in the space, nor do people hang out much and drink and do private things. Construction slows the movement of traffic, but when it’s over, the bridge will be a deco gem, like it was in 1930.

Looking south from the temporary bridge at the Fourth Avenue stop on the F Train, this is what the track and platform work looks like. Progress is being made, but the bridge isn’t coming down any time soon.

It’s where some of the subway trains go for a little seaside R & R (rest & rehabilitation).
Gyro Place, seen from the F Train bus

The front of the extra-long bus that was running in lieu of the subway said “F Train” so I’m playing along. Gyro Place is just off Church Avenue, and what’s unique about its facade are the two huge depictions of gyro meat on either side of the green sign. Gyro lovers see these and get hungry? From my bus seat I could also observe pigeons using one of the gyros as a landing pad.

Brooklyn F Train riders, your inconvenience is about to begin. The bridge is back up at Fourth Avenue; work is starting on the outbound tracks next weekend. Some stops (15th St. and Ft. Hamilton) between Fourth Avenue and Church will be skipped for months.

So many buses on Church Avenue – usually not the one you’re waiting for, though. It’s a law of urban nature.

Blame Hurricane Irene. No subway service until… Monday? No one knows. Want to learn English? Watch the nonstop TV reports about the hurricane. They are very repetitious, good for learning vocabulary.
