There’s something optimistic about a snowfall. We’re turned into eternal kids who are hoping for the word that school is cancelled. NYC public schools already had a snow day this year; don’t know if we’ll see another.

There’s no real food at The Chocolate Room, just chocolate items, ice cream, coffees, teas, hot chocolate, some kid-friendly drinks, and wine. Judging from the crowds, it’s a winning combination.

You’d think we were farmers here in NYC, the way we carry on about the weather. But it really was cold today! I don’t think the temperatures made it above the mid-twenties. If it looks like someone’s laughing, his or her face probably froze in that position yesterday.

One week into January and the temperature was 60 degrees today. That’s why people are sitting at sidewalk tables while others are walking by in winter jackets. It’s going to be at least 15 degrees cooler tomorrow; sidewalk cafes will be closed again for a few more months.

It’s not easy to read the newspaper wearing gloves. The weather is warmer now, but people are used to bundling up. We’ll get out of that habit soon.

If the fence gate weren’t locked, there would be footprints all over. Something about an untouched expanse of snow is enticing, even after this crazy, record-breaking month of snowfall NYC has had.

All we need to call it a party is some hot cocoa…and a volunteer on this dreary, rainy day to plug in an extension cord and see if this popcorn popper works.

The snow is getting wetter and more compacted every day. But don’t worry, we may have a few more inches tomorrow! Note the green dot on the tree to the right – could indicate limbs will be trimmed soon.
