After you walk through a dark tunnel, the Stillwell Avenue subway lets out onto Surf Avenue. It’s flat and unremarkable: Nathan’s is to the right, plywood is across the street. No gigantic multicolor lollipops are for sale anywhere in sight. Be patient, though; it’s still winter.

Sit tight, wait for the show, and admire the theatrical lighting; there won’t be trains running on this side of the platform for several hours. It seems that there’s a lot of subway construction, a.k.a. “necessary trackwork,” going on lately.
