Basement is used across different languages, but what happened to rumpus rooms? Were they all replaced by media rooms and wine cellars? To translate, here in New York, a media room is a bachelor pad, and a wine cellar is the space behind the stairs (if you have stairs) where a case of wine can be stowed along with assorted tools and winter boots.

An antiques shop on Atlantic Avenue has this sign for sale. I like looking at it, at sidewalk level (because I like thinking about sitting at a drugstore fountain), but if you bought it, what you do with it? I think it’s for people who move to suburbia and have a rumpus room. Or basement bar, or TV lounge, or do product placement in their living room ….
