The birds outnumbered the humans yesterday at Coney Island. People wandered around the boardwalk. Drunks stood at the entrance to the bar, even though it was closed. We walked on the beach then fed the seagulls some Pepperidge Farm stuffing. The birds would be a ready-made feast for their predators.

Gulls see bread, go crazy

The seagulls at Coney Island are not hungry; bread drives them into a frenzy at all times. Humans were all bundled up on the beach, with the exception of the Polar Bears. In case you’ve never heard of them, they are an ocean swimming club that loves publicity and seems suspicious of clothing.
Snacks? Where?

The seagulls at Coney Island aren’t terribly aggressive, the way gulls at some beaches are. Maybe they are spoiled, like the ducks in Prospect Park, where soggy, unwanted bread laps the shoreline. The seagulls’ beach diet is more diverse – there’s greasy, salty food from the boardwalk and picnic leftovers.

Ah, those greedy scavengers, I love them! Today is the first day spring. Winter was cruel, so there will be some celebrating when the warmer weather arrives. Today I may make like Mary Tyler Moore and toss half my sandwich into the air and watch the birds go mad (yes, even for peanut butter). Next stop: summer!
