The lot has been scraped clean for a while, but right now it’s mainly a parking lot for cement trucks.
In the near future, there will be apartment buildings constructed along Smith Street. A few years after that, a “sponge park” will go in along the Gowanus. Natural materials such as dirt and grass will be used to help rid the canal of its toxins. Getting a project like this started takes forever because: it is a public undertaking, and no one can agree on the best (safest) method of cleaning up the area.
