After you walk through a dark tunnel, the Stillwell Avenue subway lets out onto Surf Avenue. It’s flat and unremarkable: Nathan’s is to the right, plywood is across the street. No gigantic multicolor lollipops are for sale anywhere in sight. Be patient, though; it’s still winter.

Make a U-turn, follow the subway track, and you’ll quickly be in Coney Island, at the Stillwell Avenue station. Said to be the world’s largest elevated subway terminal, it is named after Nicholas Stillwell (1603-1671), a farmer who settled the area.
