‘sNice is a shop that specializes in sandwiches, desserts, coffee, and other drinks. It also doesn’t serve meat, so if you’re vegetarian or vegan, you’ll probably be happy eating there. Hardcore carnivores might be happier at Pork Slope.

After eight years of discussions, disagreements, and resubmissions, the Board of Standards and Appeals has approved Whole Food’s proposal for a 58,000 square foot store at the corner of Third Avenue and Third Street. The Gowanus is the barrier on the lot’s other long side. Nothing will grow here, except for a few weeds, because of the contamination.

Chayote is a kind of squash. Most in the US are grown in Mexico. Used in latino cooking, its flavor is mild. When I saw one sitting by the curb, I had to stop and have a look.

Like the lotus, this plant is a thing of beauty growing in a challenging situation. Here, where the sidewalk meets the plywood, you can see the the nearby superfunded Gowanus Canal seeping through the fence.
A tree grows slowly on Third Street

This tree is the runt on the block at the moment, but trying to catch up to the other trees. You can tell that the Gowanus Canal is nearby because there are not many plants growing on Third Street.
