Can we get back to normal, please? Buses replaced the subways between Church Ave. and Jay Streets for the second weekend in a row, and was it ever slow. Taking pictures out the window of the foliage did not compensate for time spent on the hard blue seats.

The Bangladeshi street fair on McDonald Avenue yesterday was colorful, loud, and impeding traffic. That’s not unusual, but especially unfortunate when it coincides with trains between Church and Jay Street being replaced by shuttle buses. Mass transit riders were not happy.

If you take the local shuttle bus that is replacing the F and G trains between Jay Street and Church Avenue this weekend, you’ll enjoy a similar smudged view from the seats on the left. The shuttle trains run frequently, but adding this detour to a trip is still a big nuisance.

Another weekend of messed up subways. Riders seem resigned, almost used to it. The sun came out for a few minutes, and there was no rain. If it was the middle of winter and freezing cold, everyone at the bus stop would be complaining big time.

These signs are for bus changes, but nearby you’ll find some postings about the subways, too. Work is being done this weekend on approximately three-quarters of the city’s subway lines. The MTA says they need to perform repairs, etc. before winter and cold weather arrive. For riders, a half-hour ride might take an hour and require a few subway changes and/or a bus ride. Fortunately, there are lots of MTA personnel out to give directions and help riders.

Those modular panels made of two-by-fours and plastic mesh have crept down the track from Smith and Ninth to the Fourth Avenue stop on the F line (and G now, too) . The wooden framework looks like a peace sign bisected by a stepladder; it appears sufficient to protect track workers from debris that a moving subway train might stir up.

This is why there have been service changes on the F and G Trains lately. Work is being done on the elevated section around Smith and 9th and Fourth Avenue, and to protect the outside tracks, panels of screens (seen here, stacked) are being erected. Can’t yet tell what the real work is going to involve.
