The growers in California would like you to know that this humble-looking vegetable is related to the artichoke. Cardone (or cardoon) is eaten in France and Italy, where it’s cut into pieces and boiled or fried. At Three Guys from Brooklyn, no one was touching the stuff.

Yesterday was International Day at PS 230. The short block in front of the school was closed to traffic and tables for crafts, displays, and food were set up, and at one end of the street, musicians took turns on a plywood stage. The variety of vegetables on display was fascinating; I’d be surprised if anyone knew every single one by name.
